Oral Hygiene – Preventative Care
Poor oral hygiene is likely to lead to gum disease, or Gingivitis, which can cause Periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis involves an inflammation of the gums and potential bone loss, and if not treated can also lead to tooth loss.
Inadequate oral health can also affect your overall health as bacteria from the gums can enter the blood stream and travel to major organs, starting new infections.
Cleaning teeth correctly can help to remove bacterial plaque. This can be done by maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine which includes:
- Brushing twice a day
- Flossing daily
- Regular preventative care/active maintenance appointments with a hygienist, who can perform a professional clean helping to remove bacteria under the gums. A professional clean will also remove the hard buildup of plaque that even regular cleaning cannot remove.
