Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Gum disease can take on different forms but a common one is the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth. This can cause inflammation of the gums as well as other risk factors, which can lead to the damage and loss of bone around the teeth.

Gingivitis is most easily treated at its early stages when bacteria first begin to attack the soft tissues and gums. Early signs of Gingivitis are when the gums are red, sore, inflamed and may even bleed during brushing and begin to recede along the tooth.

The next and even more serious stage of gum disease is Periodontitis, where bacteria infiltrate deeper into the gums and affect the sustaining ligament and bone structure holding the tooth in place. If this is left untreated, tooth loss can occur (painlessly) over time.Research shows that this can further contribute to the development of heart disease, diabetes, premature birth and an increased risk of stroke. It can also pose a serious threat to those with health problems such as diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis.

We recommend patients see our Hygienist on a regular basis in order to prevent this disease and ensure optimal dental health.
